The Sims 4 For Rent

For Rent is an expansion pack about rental homes. It came out on December 7, 2023. It adds Residential Rental lots, where many households live on one lot. Your Sim can be the property owner or a tenant. The pack also adds the world of Tomarang, which is based on Southeast Asia.

We took the date, the item counts, and the needs from the EA page. We opened it on October 26, 2026. The price, the limits, and the trait count are from Steam on the same day. The world facts and the lot challenge are from the GG Recon review.

A Residential Rental lot holds more than one household. You split the building into units in Build Mode. Each unit is a group of rooms that belongs to one household. The game shows each unit in a different color.

What can you build?

Steam names four examples: basement suites, duplexes, townhomes, and apartments. A unit has no minimum size. Sims Community says that a unit can have more than one entrance. The old apartment doors from City Living did not allow that.

What are shared spaces?

You can set a room as a shared space. All tenants can use it. A gym, a laundry room, or a pool works well as a shared space. In a family home, share the kitchen and the living room, and keep the bedrooms private.

Is there a loading screen between units?

GG Recon says that you see the other units on the lot with no loading screen. When your Sim moves to a different unit, a loading screen still shows.

In the game, the landlord is the property owner. Your Sim can own a rental lot in two ways. Each way gives a different kind of play.

1. Rent out spare units on the lot where your Sim lives. Your Sim lives among the tenants.
2. Buy a second lot in any world as an investment. Your Sim earns money without living there.

How do you pick tenants?

Tenants send applications. Each application shows the age of the tenants, the number of beds they want, and their rent budget. Read them before you say yes. A good choice now prevents problems later.

What does the Handyperson career do?

Handyperson is the new career in the pack. It is tied to the repair work in rental buildings. For other ways to start a job, see how to get a job in Sims 4.

How much is rent?

The property owner sets the rent with the For Lease sign. You can set one rent for the building or a different rent for each unit. A large suite can cost more than a small room. You can also charge family members nothing.

Rent shows as a daily amount, but tenants pay each week. Sims Community gives the formula: the daily rent times 7. So $50 a day is $350 a week. Utilities are not in the rent. Tenants pay them as a separate bill.

How long is a lease?

Most leases last 7 days. A tenant can move out at the end of the lease with no penalty. A tenant who gives notice in the middle of the lease pays a $500 fine.

What rules can the landlord set?

• No Social Events
• No Loud Noises
• Maximum Occupancy
• No Trash Overload
• No Ghosts

Push Square says that the owner can fine tenants who break a rule.

Who pays for repairs?

The owner pays. Tenants call the owner from the Home app on the phone. The owner then inspects and repairs broken appliances, and the repair is free for the tenant. Maintenance events include insect infestations, sewage leaks, electrical problems, and hauntings. Fix each one before the timer ends, and the unit rating goes up.

What happens if a tenant does not pay?

Send a rent demand first. It gives the tenant time to pay. If the tenant still does not pay, the owner can take their belongings. The last step is eviction. GG Recon warns that an unfair eviction lowers the unit rating and can cost you an eviction settlement.

Each unit has a rating. The size, the condition, and the items in the unit change it. A high rating brings more applications, and you can charge more rent.

Steam says to keep the ratings high to prevent a Tenant Revolt. In practice, fast repairs and fair rules keep tenants happy. Expensive appliances raise the rating, but they also raise the bills. Watch that the rent covers the bills of the building.

Tomarang is a world based on Southeast Asia. It has two neighborhoods, Koh Sapa and Morensong, and 9 lots. GG Recon calls it beautiful but a bit empty.

The Night Market

Steam calls the Night Market the most famous scene in Tomarang. It is in Morensong and has many food stalls. Your Sims can try new foods there, such as halo-halo. GG Recon says that only four stalls have Sims who run them.

Other places to visit

• The Fish Market on the Morensong waterfront. It opens from 4 PM to 12 AM and sells seafood to cook at home.
• The Tinsu Temple. A visit gives your Sim a moodlet.
• The Tiger Sanctuary in Koh Sapa. You choose what your Sim does, step by step, as in a story book.

New culture items and games

Steam says that the pack adds new foods and new objects from Tomarang. It also lists marbles and hopscotch as new games for your Sims.

Steam lists 4 new traits and 4 new aspirations. GG Recon names the traits Child of the Village, Cringe, Generous, and Nosy. One new aspiration is Seeker of Secrets, which is about snooping and breaking in. For a full trait list, see our Sims 4 traits guide.

Secrets and blackmail

Tenants live close together, so they learn things about each other. Your Sim can eavesdrop at doors or snoop in beds and wardrobes. Each secret can stay private, or your Sim can use it to blackmail a neighbor for Simoleons.

New social events

The Neighborhood Potluck is a new event. Cook food, thank the guests, and clean up before the time ends to get a medal. GG Recon also mentions a Pool Party.

The Mold lot challenge

Dirty appliances can grow toxic mold, and it spreads fast. Clean it or burn it. If you do not, your Sims can get an illness called Moldinitis. A severe form of Moldinitis can kill a Sim.

It is worth it if you want apartments in any world, or if you like to manage money. GG Recon gave it 4 out of 5. The reviewer calls the rental system brilliant and says it is hard to play without it now.

It is less useful if you want a large new world. Tomarang has only 9 lots. GG Recon says the pack is close to a smaller game pack in size. The rental system can also take time to learn.

They talk back in your own words and remember you. It has no build mode and no rental lots, so it does not replace For Rent. It also has no cheats console. Can you build rental lots in other worlds?

Yes. Steam says that you can build Residential Rental lots in any world where Sims can live.

Can tenants change their unit?

Yes. Sims Community says that tenants can change walls, floors, and items in their own unit and in the shared space. They cannot change the units of other tenants.

Who is the landlord if I play a tenant?

The owner is a Sim that you play, or a Sim that the game picks for you.
