How to pay bills in The Sims 4

Pay bills in The Sims 4 at the mailbox, computer, or phone. See when bills come, what happens if you skip them, how to lower them, and the bills cheat.

Click the mailbox on your lot and choose Pay Bills. You can also pay from a computer or from the phone of your Sim. The bill must arrive first, and your household must have the money.

The three ways, from the guides by Snooty Sims and Dexerto:

Way to payWhat to doWhen it helps
MailboxSend a Sim to the mailbox. Click it and choose Pay Bills.Every home lot has one, usually in front of the house.
ComputerSeat a Sim at the computer. Click it and choose Pay Bills. The Sim stays inside the house.
PhoneClick the phone icon at the bottom left. Choose Pay Bills.Dexerto says this works when the Sim is away on vacation.

In an apartment, the mailbox is on the wall of the hallway, near the door of your unit. Dexerto gives this location.

We opened these pages on November 3, 2026. You read this on the LifeSim blog. We make a browser life sim, and we say where our game does not fit.

Check three things first: the age of the Sim, the money of the household, and the date of the bill.

Is the Sim too young?

Only Sims from Teen to Elder can pay. Snooty Sims says that a child can pick up the bills and move them, but cannot pay them. Select a teen or an adult, and try again.

Is there enough money?

The game takes the full amount of the bill from the household funds. If the funds are too low, earn more money first. Our guide on ways to earn Simoleons in The Sims 4 lists jobs and skills that pay.

Can you pay bills early?

We found no page that we could open with a clear answer. Search results from Prima Games say that you cannot pay before the bill arrives. That page did not load for us. Wait for the bill notice, then pay.

Bills come once a week. Snooty Sims says the bill arrives in the mailbox every Monday. Dexerto also says the bills are weekly.

The bill notice gives a time limit. Dexerto says you have 48 hours to pay. After that time, the game starts to cut the utilities. The next section gives the order.

What is on the bill?

The game changed the bill screen in 2020. Sims Community reported the change on May 21, 2020. The new bill estimate shows these parts:

  • Lot taxes
  • Power
  • Water
  • Other taxes
  • Tax breaks and penalties

The same screen shows how much power and water the household uses. Click the mailbox to see this breakdown. Snooty Sims says that Sims 4 bills cost more than in older Sims games, because of the taxes.

Why are my bills so high?

We found no official formula for the bill. The parts above show that taxes, power, and water add to it. Players on the EA forums say the value of the items on the lot and in inventories also counts. We could not open those threads, so we list this in the section at the end.

The power goes off first. Then the water goes off. Then a Repo-man comes to take your items. The sources agree on this order, but not on the exact hours.

StepSnooty SimsDexerto and The Sims News
Power cutAfter 2 days (48 Sim hours). Appliances stop.Dexerto: power and water after 48 hours.
Water cutThe page does not mention water. The Sims News: water goes off after the power.
Repo-manAfter 2 more days. He comes back each day until you pay.The Sims News: he takes items with a value near the amount that you owe.

The Sims News says the game gives a final warning before the cut. It also says the Sims pay the bills on their own if they have the money. We could not confirm that second point in another source.

Can you stop the Repo-man?

Pay the bill. The Sims News says that you can ask the Repo-man to take a different item, or fight him. Both only delay the problem. The page also says that some mods remove the Repo-man.

What happens in an apartment?

Your Sim is not evicted for unpaid bills. Snooty Sims and The Sims News both say that the landlord refuses to fix things until you pay.

Use the Frugal reward trait, live off the grid, or make your own power and water. Each way has a different cost.

How does the Frugal trait work?

Buy it in the Rewards Store with Satisfaction Points. Sims Community gives the price of 2,000 points. That page says only that the bills go down. The 25% figure comes from Snooty Sims. Each Sim can buy a reward trait only once.

What does the Off-the-Grid lot trait do?

The lot has no link to the power and water grid. Sims Community says the household then pays only for the value of the property. Snooty Sims says the trait removes the power and water bills and cuts lot taxes by 25%. Ultimate Sims Guides gives a different number: 75 Simoleons off.

Your Sims must use items from the Off the Grid section of Build/Buy. Examples are candles, wood-burning stoves, and ice box fridges. Sims can collect water from a pond, a river, or a lake. Each trip gives 5 units of water.

The sources disagree about the pack. Sims Community calls it a base game lot challenge. Ultimate Sims Guides, from June 2020, says it comes with Island Living. Both agree that it is not part of Eco Lifestyle.

Can you sell power in Sims 4?

Yes, with Eco Lifestyle. Sims Community says that a home can sell extra power back to the power company. If your Sims make as much power as they use, the home works as if it were on the grid.

Snooty Sims gives these production ratings. A wind turbine has a power rating of 3. A solar panel has 2. A household generator has 5, but it has an industrial eco footprint. The page gives no number for the money that each one saves.

Yes. The official EA cheat list has household.autopay_bills. EA describes it as a cheat that enables or disables bills for the household.

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + C on PC or Mac. On a console, hold all four shoulder buttons.
  2. Type testingcheats true and press Enter.
  3. Type household.autopay_bills true and press Enter.
  4. To turn bills back on, type household.autopay_bills false.

EA says that on a console, these cheats turn off achievements and trophies for that save. Snooty Sims says the true value turns off all bills. Some search results say the cheat no longer works. Test it in your game.

If you only need more money, use the motherlode and other money cheats. The full list is on our Sims 4 cheats page.

Is there a mod for no bills?

Yes. MC Command Center has money settings for bills. Sims Community lists these options:

  • Auto-pay Bills: the mod pays the bills for you.
  • Change Bills Percent: make the bills of homes higher or lower.
  • Apartment Bill Percent: the same setting for City Living apartments.
  • Allow Child Pay Bills: let children pay the bills.

Read our guide to MC Command Center for the install steps. For other mods and safety tips, see how Sims 4 mods work.

Rent shows as a daily rate, but tenants pay once a week. The weekly rent is the daily rate times seven. Sims Community gives this example: a rate of 50 Simoleons a day is 350 a week.

Tenants also pay for their own utilities, on top of the rent. Check the bill breakdown in the Home app on the phone, or click the mailbox. The rent is part of that bill.

Most leases last 7 days. A tenant can leave at the end of a lease with no penalty. A notice in the middle of a lease costs a fine of 500 Simoleons. Read our Sims 4 For Rent overview for the landlord side.

The Sims 4 has the deeper bill system. It has utilities, taxes, a Repo-man, and solar power. LifeSim does not have these menus. If you want to build a green house and sell power, stay with The Sims 4.

LifeSim is a free life simulation game in the browser and on iPhone, with no ads. You live one life in a real city on a 3D map of Earth. The people talk back in their own words and remember you. See how LifeSim works, or read the full comparison with The Sims.

How do you pay bills on Sims 4 on PS4 or Xbox?

Use the mailbox, the computer, or the phone, the same as on PC. The guides that we opened give no other steps for consoles.

How often do you pay bills in Sims 4?

Once a week. Snooty Sims says the bill arrives every Monday.

Can a child pay the bills?

No, not in the normal game. MC Command Center has a setting that lets children pay.

How long until the power goes off?

About 48 Sim hours after the bill is due, according to Snooty Sims and Dexerto.

Does the Repo-man take anything?

The Sims News says he tries to take items with a value near the amount that you owe.

Do bills come on an off-grid lot?

Yes, but they are smaller. Sims Community says the household still pays for the property value.

  • The exact formula for the bill. Players say the value of the lot and of inventories counts. The EA forum threads did not load for us.
  • The exact hours before the water cut and the Repo-man. Snooty Sims and Dexerto give different timelines.
  • Whether you can pay a bill before it arrives. The Prima Games page did not load for us.
  • Whether household.autopay_bills still works in the current game. Search results say it may not.
  • The pack for the Off-the-Grid lot trait. Sims Community says base game, and Ultimate Sims Guides says Island Living.
  • The exact money saved by the Off-the-Grid trait. Snooty Sims says 25% off lot taxes, and Ultimate Sims Guides says 75 Simoleons.
  • Whether the 25% Frugal discount stacks for two or more Frugal Sims. Only forum posts say so.
  • Whether Sims pay their bills on their own. Only The Sims News says so.
