How to move house in The Sims 4

How to move house in The Sims 4: Move Household on the phone, keep or sell furniture, move one Sim out, move in together, and move a lot.

Open the phone of a Sim, tap Travel, and pick Move Household. The map opens. Pick a new home and click the moving truck. The game asks if you want to keep or sell your furniture. Then the family moves in.

You can also move from the world map. Open Manage Worlds, click your house, click the More ("…") button, and pick Move Household. Both ways give the same result.

The household must pay for the new home. If the money is too low, sell the furniture, or pick a cheaper lot. A household holds at most 8 Sims, pets included.

We checked these steps against eight guides and three Steam threads on November 2, 2026. The EA help pages did not open for us, so the menu names come from fan guides.

You pick one of two choices when you move:

ChoiceWhat happens
Keep FurnitureThe furniture goes into the household inventory. The old house stays empty.
Sell FurnitureThe furniture stays on the old lot, and the household gets the cash. Everything in the house and the yard goes.

Sims Community describes both choices. GameRevolution warns that Sell Furniture takes everything in the house and the yard. Put the items that you want to keep in the inventory first.

How do you keep only some furniture?

  1. Before you move, enter Build Mode on the old lot.
  2. Drag each item that you want to keep into the household inventory.
  3. Move, and pick Sell Furniture.
  4. On the new lot, place the items from the inventory.

Where is my furniture after I moved?

Look in the household inventory in Build Mode. A Steam thread asks this question. If the furniture is not there, check that you picked Keep Furniture.

You pay the price of the new lot. GameRevolution says that an empty lot costs the lot price. If you move into a home where an other family lives, you evict them and pay for the property. A merge with that family is free.

What if you do not have enough money?

  • Pick Sell Furniture to get cash from the old house.
  • Pick a smaller or an empty lot, and build later.
  • Use the cheat for free homes. Snooty Sims says that freerealestate on makes the move free.

Read about the cheat on our freerealestate page. For honest ways to save, read how to make money in The Sims 4. See also the Sims 4 bills page, because a bigger house can mean bigger bills.

Split the household in Manage Worlds. Sims Community gives the steps. Click the button with two arrows to open Transfer Sims Between Households. Pick Create a New Household, and move the Sim to the new side.

  1. Open Manage Worlds, and click the household.
  2. Click the More ("…") button, then the button with two arrows.
  3. Pick Create a New Household.
  4. Select the Sim, and click the arrow between the two family boxes.
  5. Move money with the arrow too, if you want.
  6. Open Manage Households and pick Move Household onto Lot for the new family.

Can a child move out alone?

No. GameRant says that children cannot move out alone. A household needs at least one Sim who is a teen or older.

How much money does a Sim get when they move out?

The guides do not agree. Snooty Sims says that one Sim who moves out gets a budget of §20,000. Sims Community says that the new household gets only the money that you transfer.

Why can I not split the funds?

A Steam thread covers this. One reply says that you must also move a Sim. The first poster later found that a click on the arrow worked. Click the arrow to finish the transfer.

Use Ask to Move In. GameRant says that it is in the Friendly menu, once the two Sims are good friends. Gamer Tweak calls it Ask to Join Household.

GameRant says that the limit of 8 Sims holds "regardless of the size of the lot". It also says that if a married partner lives alone, the game adds their money to your household.

GameRevolution says that married Sims agree at once. The game then opens the household screen, so you can pick who moves.

Can you merge two households?

Yes. Use the same Transfer Sims screen, and move every Sim to one side. Sims Community says that the game then asks if you want to sell the furniture of the household on the left.

Save it to your library, and place it on the new lot. GameRant and GameRevolution give the same steps:

  1. Enter Build Mode on the house.
  2. Click the folder icon and pick Save To My Library.
  3. Open Manage Worlds and pick the new lot.
  4. Open the Gallery, then My Library, and place the house.

GameRant warns about two points. The new lot must be the same size as the house. Items that your Sim crafted or upgraded do not move with the house, so put them in the inventory first.

This is also the way to move to an other world. Save the lot, and place it on a lot in the new world. To move walls and furniture freely while you build, use the bb.moveobjects cheat.

Can you move a house from Xbox to PC?

Yes, through the Gallery. A Steam thread confirms it. Save the household to your library, share it to the Gallery from the Xbox, and download it on the PC.

With the For Rent pack, a household can rent a unit. Sims Community says that a unit comes furnished or unfurnished, and that furniture costs extra. It also says that most leases last 7 days.

Sims Community says that a break of the lease costs a §500 fine. Tenants can change their own unit and the shared space.

Can you own a home and an empty lot at once?

Players ask this on Steam. The guides that we read do not answer it. Test it in your own game.

In LifeSim, yes. LifeSim is our game, a free AI life sim in your browser and on iPhone. You import a Sims 4 household, and each Sim becomes a person in a real city on a 3D map of Earth.

LifeSim has no Build Mode like The Sims 4 and no Manage Worlds screen. The people of the city are AI characters who talk to you in your own words. If you want to build and furnish a house, The Sims 4 is the better fit.

Read how LifeSim works, or compare LifeSim and The Sims.

How do you move houses on console?

Use the same menus: the phone, or Manage Worlds. The guides that we read do not list different steps for PlayStation or Xbox.

What happens to the old house when you move?

It stays in the world. With Keep Furniture, it is empty. With Sell Furniture, the furniture stays on it. An other household can move in later.

What does Evict Household do?

Sims Community says that the family leaves the lot and the furniture stays. The Sims keep their money and the value of the home. They stay in Manage Households with no home.

Can you delete a household?

Yes, in Manage Households. Sims Community warns that this "is permanent and can't be undone!"

How do you fix furniture that went to the inventory by mistake?

A Steam thread gives a fix. Save the lot to your library, bulldoze it, and place it again.
