The Sims Movie

Is there a Sims movie? Who directs it, who is in the cast, when it comes out, what the plot is, and the earlier Sims films that never got made.

Lifesim, Inc.

Is there a Sims movie?

Yes, a live-action Sims movie is in development at Amazon MGM Studios. Nobody can watch it yet. As of October 31, 2026, we found no release date, no cast and no trailer.

EA confirmed the film on September 17, 2024. The post on the Sims site said: “We’re VERY excited to share that in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios, our team is working on a film based on The Sims.” Shacknews and Sims Community quote this text.

Kate Herron, the director of the first season of Loki, will direct the film. She co-writes the script with Briony Redman. Margot Robbie’s company LuckyChap produces it with Vertigo Entertainment and the Sims team at EA.

This post gives the facts that we could check, with the date of each one. You read it on the LifeSim blog. LifeSim is our game, and it is not a Sims game. We say where it fits near the end.

Who is making the Sims movie?

Amazon MGM Studios makes the film, with EA. The table shows each role and the source that names it.

Kate Herron

TheWrap says that Herron directed the whole first season of Loki. She also directed episodes of Sex Education, The Last of Us and Doctor Who. The Sims will be her first feature film as a director.

Briony Redman

Variety reported in March 2024 that Herron and Redman wrote a Doctor Who episode together. They now write the Sims script as a pair.

How the deal came together

Variety first reported the project on March 22, 2024. At that time, no studio had the film. Variety said that the agency CAA offered the project to studios. In September 2024, EA named Amazon MGM Studios as the studio.

Is Margot Robbie in the Sims movie?

We found no source that says Margot Robbie acts in the film. She is a producer, through her company LuckyChap.

Some headlines say that the movie is “starring Margot Robbie”. The articles under those headlines name her as a producer only. Producer Roy Lee told The Direct in September 2025: “And I’m producing with Margot Robbie.” He named no actor.

Is the Reese Witherspoon and Dave Bautista Sims movie real?

No. In 2025, a poster and a teaser showed Reese Witherspoon and Dave Bautista in a Sims movie. They gave an August 2025 date. Gamepressure says that the poster is fake. It came from a satirical Facebook profile that makes joke previews of films.

Who is in the cast?

Nobody, as far as the sources say. Dexerto wrote in September 2025 that EA had not shared a cast. We found no casting news after that date. If you see a cast list, look for the name of a trade outlet such as Variety or Deadline.

When is the Sims movie coming out?

Nobody has announced a release date. EA, Amazon MGM Studios and the producers gave no date and no year.

The status, update by update

  • September 2024: EA said that it was “still too early to share more about the movie”.
  • February 2025: Laura Miele of EA spoke to CBS Mornings. ComicBook.com reports that she said the film has a settled plot. She gave no timeline.
  • May 2025: Herron spoke to Variety about The Last of Us. Dark Horizons quotes her: “I’m just writing away, but we’re all feeling very good about it.”
  • September 2025: Roy Lee told The Direct that he cannot say much, “because it’s going to be unique.”

We found no newer official update in 2026. The last update from the director says that the script was still in progress.

What about 2027?

Dexerto guessed that a release could come in 2027 at the earliest. That is the guess of one outlet, not a date from EA or Amazon. Treat it as a guess.

Where can you watch the Sims movie?

You cannot watch it anywhere yet. No source names a platform. In 2024, Kate Gorman of EA said that the team wants “an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie.” That is a goal, not a release plan. Dexerto reads it as a plan for cinemas.

What is the Sims movie about?

The plot is a secret. No studio and no producer has told the story of the film.

Some facts about the tone and the content are public. Kate Gorman, a vice president at EA, spoke in September 2024. ComingSoon quotes her: “There will be a lot of lore.” She also said: “There will be Freezer Bunnies.”

Gorman also joked: “I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalized any of those details.” Players know the trick. A Sim in a pool with no ladder cannot get out.

In February 2025, Laura Miele said that the story “celebrates some of the lore and some of the history of The Sims that fans will recognize.” ComicBook.com reports this quote. ComicBook.com guesses that the story is about Bella Goth, who disappeared in The Sims 2. That is a guess. No source from the film confirms it.

Is the Sims movie like Barbie?

The producers compare it to Barbie and to The Lego Movie. Roy Lee told The Direct: “Somewhere in between both ‘The Lego Movie’ and ‘Barbie’ is where ‘The Sims’ movie will be.”

Does the film tie in with the games?

Maybe. ComicBook.com says that Miele was excited about game content that goes with the film. EA gave no detail. To follow the games, read about Project Rene and a Sims 5 release date.

Was there a Sims movie before?

No Sims film came out before. Two earlier plans stopped before filming, according to Wikipedia.

20th Century Fox, 2007 to 2019

In May 2007, a live-action Sims drama was announced. 20th Century Fox bought the film rights in 2007. Brian Lynch was the writer, and John Davis was the producer. The project stayed in development for years. After Disney bought 21st Century Fox in 2019, the film was cancelled with other Fox video game films.

Legendary Entertainment, 2020

In April 2020, reports said that Legendary Entertainment developed live-action Sims and SimCity films. Wikipedia names Mike Rosillio as the writer of the SimCity script. Nothing more came of it.

LuckyChap and Amazon, 2024 to now

The current film started in March 2024 with LuckyChap and Vertigo. Amazon MGM Studios joined in September 2024. It is the third attempt. It is also the first attempt that EA announced itself.

What can you play while you wait for the Sims movie?

Play The Sims 4. It is the current Sims game, and the base game costs nothing. Read is The Sims 4 free? for the details. Fans of the lore can start a legacy challenge and follow one family for ten generations.

LifeSim is the life simulation game that we make. It is free, with no ads and nothing to buy. You talk to them in your own words, and they remember you.

LifeSim is not a Sims game. It has no Build Mode, and you do not control a family. The Sims 4 wins if you want to build houses or run a household. LifeSim fits if you want to live one life, a day at a time.
