What is The Sims 4 Life & Death?
Life & Death is an expansion pack for The Sims 4. It came out on October 31, 2024. It adds a Reaper career, an Undertaker career, playable ghosts, funerals, and a rebirth system. Wikipedia says the pack “adds gameplay options related to Sim deaths and afterlife”.
The pack is for players who want death to be part of the game. If you want a base game with no packs, this pack is not needed.
You read this on the LifeSim blog. We make a browser life sim, and we say where our game does not fit. We list only what the pages below say.
What does the Reaper career do?
A Sim starts as a Grimtern and works up to Reaper at the Netherworld Department of Death. EA says that Grimterns train with a practice dummy named Kenny, take care of scythes, reap practice souls, and decide the cause of death.
At higher levels, a Reaper decides which souls to reap and which souls to return to life. Souls go into the Netherworld Portal to meet a quota. A Grimtern who meets the quota can become Employee of the Month.
A normal work day
Dexerto says a work day has three parts: preparation, reaping, and getting back to the office. Preparation starts with Scrying for an assignment. A reaping task usually means that you collect the soul of a dead Sim. You take a witness statement, check the objects nearby, and decide the cause of death. The day ends with tasks such as a Death Certificate.
Some days differ. On those days, the Sim closes Netherworld Fissures or fixes a broken portal.
How to move up
Dexerto lists a promotion path with ten levels. The skill that matters most is Thanatology. Charisma matters because the Sim often comforts witnesses and grieving Sims. Fitness is also a requirement at some levels. The guide says the career has one path.
We cannot confirm the wages in the guide for the current game version. Check them in your own game. Pay data in guides becomes old after each patch.
What does the Undertaker career do?
The Undertaker career covers grave digging, embalming, and end-of-life services. It has two branches: Mortician and Funeral Director. The milestone rewards include a Plague Mask, a Murphy Membrane Bust, and a Corpus Commendation Plaque.
For other careers in the base game, read how to get a job in The Sims 4.
Can a Sim be a ghost and come back?
Yes. EA says that a Sim can stay as a playable Ghost. A Ghost can haunt or help the living, change how it looks, and earn Fear or Goodwill essences. The Ghost Mastery system unlocks abilities. One ability is Dream Weaver, which gives living Sims good dreams.
Soul’s Journey and rebirth
Soul’s Journey is a reward system that links to the Aspirations and Wants of a Sim. When a Sim completes it, the Sim can be reborn with the Burning Soul trait. Bucket Lists give a second path to rebirth. A Bucket List can fill by itself from the traits of the Sim, or you can write it.
If you only want to turn a Sim into a ghost, read how to become a ghost in The Sims 4. Read that guide before you buy the pack, so that you know which ghost features you already have.
What happens to a family when a Sim dies?
Grief
EA lists four types of grief: Denial, Holding It Together, Anger, and Blues. Grief can follow a death, a divorce, a job loss, or the loss of a pet. The pet part needs certain other packs.
Wills, funerals, and memorials
A Sim can leave heirlooms, leave notes, and name guardians for pets or children in a will. For a funeral, the player picks the attendees, the dress code, and one of fourteen activities. A Ghost may attend its own funeral.
Memorials include portraits, urns, tombstones, and crypts. The pack also adds a new way to die: death by a murder of crows.
The pack adds the Macabre, Chased by Death, and Skeptic traits, the Ghost Historian aspiration, and the Thanatology skill. For the life span of a Sim before death, read how long a Sim lives.
Where does the pack take place?
The pack adds the world of Ravenwood. EA lists three neighborhoods:
- Crow’s Crossing: a village with grave makers, a Mysterious Merchant, and the quest of the Ghost Mother.
- Whispering Glen: hills and ruins, with a Moon Revelry festival each night.
- Mourningvale: a home for many Ghosts, with the Baleful Bog and the Afterlife Anonymous meetups.
What does Life & Death cost, and where can I play it?
The base game is free to play, since October 18, 2022. Life & Death is paid content. The Steam page of the base game lists it as an expansion pack. Prices change, so open the Steam page for the current price. Read is The Sims 4 free?
EA lists the pack for PC (EA app), Mac, Epic Games Store, Steam, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S. For help with a pack install, read how to install Sims 4 packs. For all the packs, see how many expansion packs are there.
Who should buy Life & Death?
The answer depends on how you play. Use these rules:
- Buy it if you play long family lines. Funerals, wills, and heirlooms matter most in a long line.
- Buy it if you want a new career. The Reaper and the Undertaker are both new jobs.
- Buy it if you like dark themes and story play. The pack has a village of ghosts and a quest of the Ghost Mother.
- Skip it if you only want to build houses. The pack adds little for that play style.
The last rule is our reading of the pack. EA does not state them. Watch videos of play before you buy.
How does death fit in the life stages of a Sim?
Wikipedia lists eight life stages in The Sims 4: newborn, infant, toddler, child, teen, young adult, adult, and elder. Toddlers came in a 2017 update. A 2023 update replaced the baby stage with newborn and infant.
The elder stage is the last stage of a Sim. Life & Death gives the end of a life more play: grief for the family, a funeral, a will, and a choice for the Sim between a ghost and a rebirth. For the first stages, read how to have a baby in The Sims 4.
Does LifeSim have death and an afterlife?
No page of ours describes a Reaper, ghosts, or an afterlife. This is a place where LifeSim does not fit. LifeSim is a browser game on a real map of Earth. You live one life and talk to people on real streets.
If you want a Reaper career, buy the pack. If you want to see how LifeSim works, read how to play. For other games with a full life cycle, read games like The Sims.
