You need 100 skill points to reach level 1, and 1,440 more points to reach level 2. The cost grows with each rank, reaching 5,280 new points for level 5. At that midpoint, your Sim has 12,580 total points.

The point jumps get much larger in the second half of the skill. Going from level 6 to level 7 takes 10,140 points, which brings your total to 29,920 points. The final jump to level 10 asks for 21,120 new points, for a grand total of 81,580 points.

Your Sim gains skill points faster when Focused or Very Focused. Being Focused gives a 1.4 multiplier, while Very Focused gives a 1.6 multiplier. Avoid practicing when Angry, Sad, Very Angry, Very Sad, or Enraged, because those emotions lower your gain multiplier down to 0.8, 0.6, or 0.4.

You can stack moodlets and traits to multiply your skill gain even further. The Strong Mental Affinity trait gives a 1.4 multiplier, and the Prepared for Herbalism moodlet gives a 1.75 multiplier. The Omega Brain Boost moodlet doubles your speed with a 2 multiplier, while several other moodlets give a 1.5 multiplier.

General skill boosts also speed up your progress. The Snaggle Flustered boost multiplies your skill gain by 4. Parental Guidance and Skilling on Up both give a 3 multiplier.

Higher levels let you craft stronger remedies and unlock social interactions. Level 1 starts you with the De-stressing Decoction, and level 3 adds the Talk about Herbalism interaction alongside the Soothing Skin Balm. Level 6 is the only rank that unlocks 2 recipes at once, giving you Clear Mind Distillation and Fireleaf Extract.

The final ranks unlock top recipes like Natural Herbicide Oil at level 7 and Energizer Infusion at level 8. Level 9 gives you the Rage-Relieving Salve. Reaching level 10 unlocks the Elixir of Fertility recipe and the Give Herbalism Tips interaction.
